Join us for the 5th Annual
Finger Lakes Works With Their Hands!

This year’s event is scheduled for Thursday, October 7, 2010

Annual Finger Lakes Works…with their hands! Skilled trades and advanced manufacturing career awareness event. Last year over five hundred students and school chaperones from 22 area high schools and BOCES districts as well as home schooled youth attended the event. More than 40 businesses, colleges and organizations provided hands on demonstrations for the students including soldering, a nail driving competition, finishing concrete, and actually operating heavy equipment. In addition to Careers in Construction, students learned about advanced manufacturing and renewable energy. Demonstrations on the importance of working safely in a construction environment were also included in the day. Students participated in a variety of Skilled Trades challenges for the opportunity to win a $100 Savings Bond. Both the exhibitors and the students have indicated that this was a great way to learn more about the opportunities in our area.

Hal Smith, committee chair for the event and president of Halco Plumbing and Heating, feels that the students gain a lot from this experience. One exhibitor stated "Helping students learn more about a variety of careers helps all our businesses in the end"

This year’s Finger Lakes Works…with their hands! is made possible by a grant provided by the NYS Department of Transportation Careers in Construction program and a generous sponsorship from the Seneca Falls Savings Bank. The 2010 event will host additional green construction exhibitors and demonstrations.
