The Finger Lakes Workforce Investment Board has announced the third annual Careers in Construction Day, also known as “Finger Lakes Works…with their hands!” will take place on Thursday, October 2nd, 2008 at the Rodman Lott & Son Farms, Seneca Falls, NY and will run from 8:00am-2:00pm.
Last year’s event saw students in grades 9-12 from 17 high schools and WFL-BOCES attend to learn about career opportunities in skilled trades and precision manufacturing. More than 25 businesses, colleges, and organizations provided hands on demonstrations for the students including soldering, a nail driving competition, finishing concrete, and actually operating heavy equipment.
This year’s event promises to be just as exciting with activities directed toward all students including those headed for college. “Today’s jobs in the Skilled Trades industry require some very technical skills. The industry really needs a workforce with a background grounded in technology and math.” says Hal Smith, committee chair for the event and president of Halco Plumbing and Heating. “This event is an opportunity for students to get excited about opportunities in the industry while changing the image that jobs in the trades are for those who ‘can’t make the grade’.” The committee will be meeting regularly to plan and coordinate the event in the upcoming months.
