Spotlight On…



Finger Lakes Works…with their hands! is our annual Skilled Trades and Advanced Manufacturing career exploration event. Every year several hundred students and school personnel from all area high schools and BOCES districts attend this exciting event. More than 50 businesses, trade unions, colleges and organizations will provide hands on demonstrations and activities for the students including welding, pole climbing, nail driving competitions, engineering skills, bricklaying, electrical wiring, the actual operation of heavy equipment and much, much MORE!

In addition to Careers in Construction and Skilled Trades, students can learn about Advanced Manufacturing and Alternative Energy. Demonstrations on the importance of working safely in a construction environment are also included in the day. All participants enjoy a science show entitled ‘Physics is Phun!’  Students can participate in a variety of Skilled Trades challenges for the opportunity to win one of 5, $50 Gift Cards. Both the exhibitors and the students have always indicated that this is a great way to learn more about career and educational opportunities in our Finger Lakes area.

Business of the Month for August 2014 is…


GENEVA, NEW YORK – The Finger Lakes Workforce Investment Board (FLWIB) announced today that Silgan Containers is the August “Business of the Month” recognizing the Company’s efforts to build strong community partnerships along with their continuing contributions to the local economy.

Silgan Containers, located in Lyons, NY is a leading North American manufacturer of consumer goods packaging products that currently produces steel and aluminum containers for human and pet food consumption.  Silgan Containers is a 3.8 billion dollar a year Company with 28 Plants in the United States and 10 in Europe.  The Lyons Plant manufactures 2 million aluminum two piece cans and 2 million steel three piece cans per day.

Manufacturing these products requires a highly skilled workforce. Silgan currently employs just over 100 full time employees.  Over the years, Silgan Containers have posted jobs with Finger Lakes Works and has participated in various recruiting events and job fairs sponsored by the FLWIB.  Additionally, Silgan has used the On the Job Training program as a part of their training and retention strategy for new hires.

In 2012, Human Resource Manager, Rick Murphy joined the FLWIB.  He is the current chair-person of the Hiring and Training Committee, a member of the Pipeline Committee and a member of the Executive Committee of the Finger Lakes Advanced Manufacturing Enterprise (FAME).  Rick has worked closely with Finger Lakes Works to supply his Company with highly skilled workers.
